8th International GermanCup at Pforzheim

In 2004, it was GermanCup time again! After we had missed the event in 2002 (we were at the balloon meeting in the Europapark back then), we were happy to have kind of a home game again. Sometimes, you just have to set priorities ;-)

On Friday morning, the 40 big balloons took off for their first flight in the sky over Pforzheim.

The organizers of this spectacle of course had a special task for me: To invite 15 model balloonists and to hold a little model balloon meeting for the supporting programme.

These special shapes were yet 'big ones': The clown from Freiburg and the battery from Barry Newman (GB) take off for the Friday morning flight.

The night glow on Friday evening, choreographed by Andrew Kaye from Great Britain, was a special highlight of the event. The model balloons also took part in this show.

On Saturday morning, the big balloons took off for their third competition flight... and our penguin was right between them.

Martin Eutermoser from Rosenheim fascinated the visitors with his little blue elephant, which now can even trumpet remote-controlled.

The event was moderated by German radio SWR4 station moderator Jürgen Essig, who you can see here with one of the organizers, Waltraud Knöller.

Such a ballooning weekend can be quite exhausting! However, a model balloon envelope can also be used as a sleeping mat... ;-)

On Saturday evening, all the model balloons were put up for a group photo. Right in the middle, you can see the youngest child of the model balloon family: "Mauli", the mole, built by Karsten Knechtel from Dresden, with a height of eleven meters and a volume of over 100 cubic meters.

At the award ceremony on Sunday, the winners of the competition were given their prizes: Sven Göhler, winner in 2002, won again, prior to Tomas Hora (winner in 1995) and Günter Binder (winner in 2000).

And in 2006, the GermanCup will probably take place again, as the main sponsor, the Sparkasse Pforzheim-Calw, has already announced.
